We take a detailed look at the RX 6800 series based on AMD’s RDNA 2 architecture.
AMD has finally launched the next generation RX 6000 series graphics cards after long-running leaks. These graphics cards are built on the company’s next-generation enhanced RDNA 2 graphics architecture. We’ve heard the name Big Navi many times so far, and we have three new models: RX 6800, RX 6800 XT and RX 6900 XT.
In fact, we are not unfamiliar with the names of the new cards, and we have shared leaks using these names many times before. But let’s not go without mentioning the ‘segment’ issue. As it is known, NVIDIA was unrivaled when it came to high-end GPUs. The red team seems to break this perception with its new chips. Moreover, let’s stop getting close to NVIDIA’s Ampere GPUs, they even got ahead in some cases. Let’s take a look at the details.
Key Points of the AMD RX 6000 Series

AMD RDNA 2 Architecture
The AMD RDNA 2 GPU architecture provides a massive 54% performance increase per watt compared to the RDNA 1 GPU architecture based on the same TSMC 7nm process node. The main improvements are based on the new Infinity Cache memory design, new architectural optimizations and frequency increases with an optimized architectural approach.
With RDNA 2 DirectX 12 Ultimate and Microsoft DirectStorage full support was offered for Thus, it is possible to benefit from features such as Ray Tracing, Variable Rate Shading, Mesh Shaders and Sampler Feedback in games.
AMD Infinity Cache Cache
AMD Infinity Cache is a high-performance and newly developed cache technology suitable for 4K and 1440p games. The memory structure that comes with a 128 MB capacity in the RX 6000 series reduces power consumption by around 10% and minimizes latency. AMD also stated that the Infinity Cache design increased bandwidth by 117%.
128 MB Infinity Cache memory technology is used in all of the new graphics cards and we can define this as a large capacity cache. AMD hasn’t gone into details about this technology. But the main goal is to better manage memory traffic and provide a fast memory bandwidth. This is directly reflected in the games as high performance.
AMD Smart Access Memory
This new approach of the red team provides special advantages to the user when Ryzen 5000 series processors and Radeon RX 6000 series graphics cards are used together.
With the Smart Access Memory feature, AMD Ryzen processors can provide faster access to high speed GDDR6 memory. In this context, while the data processing of the CPU is accelerated, when combined with the new Rage mode, a performance increase of up to 13% can be achieved.
Rage: One Click Overclock
The mod, which AMD calls Rage, comes as part of Radeon Software and recognizes the usual one-click overclocking.
AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT
Let’s start with the RX 6800 XT first. This graphics card will be a direct competitor of the RTX 3080, which has a list price of $ 700.
The RX 6800 XT contains 72 Compute Units, each with 64 shader cores. The game clock of the GPU is at 2015 MHz, while the maximum boost clock is exactly 2.25 GHz. When we look at raw performance, we are talking about a total of 20.7 TFLOPS of power.
Memory with 256-bit memory interface runs at 14 Gbps. AMD says the new Infinity Cache technology reduces power usage by 10% and increases bandwidth by 117%. If we assume that the values are exactly right, it means that the average bandwidth is equivalent to 972 GBps. This value is higher than the RTX 3080’s memory. To make a bracket here, let’s underline that there is only 512 GB / s theoretical bandwidth for GDDR6 memory.
There are two other important issues. The RX 6800 XT has 6 GB more memory than the RTX 3080. As you know, the NVIDIA RTX 3080 had 10 GB of GDDR6X memory, and the new RX 6000 cards all have 16 GB of memory. This memory capacity may not work in all scenarios, but considering the cards are made for 4K gaming, it may become important in some games.
Regarding the power consumption, AMD lists the total power consumption (Total Board Power) of the new card as 300W. RTX 3080 Founders Edition was at the level of 320W. One of the issues that the red team emphasized most was power consumption and we can say that they have accomplished important things. Because TSMC’s mature production technology such as 7nm FinFET is used. Finally, let’s note that the RX 6800 XT will debut with a list price of $ 659.
Radeon RX 6800 XT Performance vs RTX 3080
According to the figures given by AMD, the new 6800 XT does not only compete with its competitor and in some cases comes ahead. AMD probably should have made a selection when choosing the games, and it’s worth noting that none of these criteria include ray tracing. Tests were done in 4K and 2K resolution. You can see the games included in the tests from the table.
The RDNA 2-based Big Navi GPU sometimes beat in 4K gaming tests, while the RTX 3080 sometimes showed the same performance. AMD also added a few games ahead of the RTX 3080 to the table.
If we come to 2K (1440p) gaming tests, we can say that the RX 6800 XT has more superiority. Only 2 games show here where the RTX 3080 excels, and overall the RX 6800 XT is ahead.
Of course, we will see special design graphics cards in the coming days. These cards will be overclocked from the factory and will come at slightly higher prices.
AMD Radeon RX 6800
If we say that the red team made not one but two competitors in front of the RTX 3080, it would be appropriate. The new RX 6800 is more performance than the RTX 3070 and the previous flagship RTX 2080 Ti if we look at the tables.
This GPU, which comes with a more affordable price tag, was announced with a $ 70 cheaper and $ 579 list price. The Radeon RX 6800 features 3840 shader cores equivalent to 60 Compute Units when using a slightly cropped Navi 21 GPU. In addition, the clock speeds are also decreasing. The GPU’s game clock is 1815 MHz and the boost clock is 2105 MHz.
However, as we just mentioned, 128 MB of Infinity Cache and 16 GB of GDDR6 memory come together with the GPU. At the end of all these decreases, the total power consumption (TBP) has decreased by up to 250W. Let’s add that this graphics card has a list price of $ 579.
Radeon RX 6800 Performance vs RTX 2080 Ti
As for the benchmark, AMD doesn’t have the RTX 3070 for testing. However, comparisons are made with the RTX 2080 Ti, which is almost equivalent to this card. Here are AMD’s 2K and 4K gaming tests:
Judging by the tests conducted in 10 different games, the RX 6800 is overwhelmingly superior to the RTX 2080 Ti and thus well above the RTX 3070. The RTX 2080 Ti was only able to approach the new GPU in Wolfenstein Youngblood.
If you remember, the RTX 3070 was launched with a starting price of $ 500. The RX 6800, on the other hand, costs $ 79 more, and has the upper hand in many aspects: twice the memory, more efficient bandwidth and superior performance. At least according to AMD’s data ..

AMD Ultimate Latency Reduction
