We have brought together the possible compatible SSD models that we think will offer the necessary speed for PlayStation 5.

Sony has confirmed that it will allow you to upgrade PlayStation 5’s internal 825GB capacity by purchasing compatible NVMe SSD drives. On the other hand, due to the nature of the PS5, you need to use an SSD model specifically listed as compatible by Sony. So what are the possible models?

Possible PS5 Compatible SSDs

At the time of this writing, Sony has yet to announce PS5 compatible SSD drives. On the other hand, the company stated that they could partner with SSD manufacturers such as Western Digital or Seagate to offer some licensed options at launch. Considering the fact that the console currently communicates with the SSD through the PCIe 4.0 interface and the current PCIe 3.0 models cannot keep up with the speed of the console’s own SSD, we can say that the models that will be compatible with the PS5 will only be PCIe 4.0 SSDs.

More SSDs with PCIe 4.0 support are on the way, so let’s take a look at the list of requirements first:

  • M.2 standard (30, 42, 60, 80 or 110 mm)
  • PCIe 4.0 support
  • A read speed of more than 5,500 GB / s

So what are the SSDs that meet these criteria? Although not all of these models are currently sold in our country, PCIe 4.0 supported and Meets PS5 requirements SSDs as follows:

Note though: PS5 still hasn’t received additional SSD compatibility updates. If you are going to buy an SSD with the idea that if it is compatible with the PS5 in the future, the above three models are the most likely models on the market. But while they are currently physically compatible with the PS5, in practice Sony has yet to turn on this feature.

Models not included in the list:

  • Seagate Firecuda 520: Read speed 5000 MB / s
  • Corsair Force MP600: Read speed 4950 MB / s
  • GIGABYTE AORUS NVMe Gen4: Read speed 5000 MB / s
  • XPG GAMMIX S50: Read speed 5000 MB / s
  • Patriot Viper Gaming VP4100: Read speed 5000 MB / s
  • Silicon Power US70: Read speed 5000 MB / s
  • Team Group T-FORCE CARDEA Ceramic C440: Reading speed 5000 MB / s
  • Sabrent Rocket Q4: Read speed: 4900 MB / s

Is PS5 compatible with standard USB external drives?

You will be able to use an existing USB External Drive for PS5, but you won’t be able to play PS5 games directly. Instead, you will be able to store game data there but you will need the main drive or a compatible NVMe SSD drive to play. You will still be able to play compatible PS4 games from these devices, so if you intend to save your existing PS4 External Drive for use on a PS5 it won’t work.
